May 2008cont... They are all within the historic County Palatine and include such gems as the Ashton Memorial, Pendle Hill, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral and Tarn Hows, near Hawkshead. His essay explains what makes each of them special. Knowsley Hall, one of Lancashire’s great stately houses, is another place well worth a visit (page 122) and there is the added attraction of a chance to win tickets to see the animals at Knowsley Safari Park. We also have five pairs of tickets to give away to see Southport Flower Show in August. Another Lancashire icon Blackpool Tower has undergone a £3 million refurbishment and we report on its funky new look. Also within our super 28 page leisure section is a feature on the battle of the brass bands and the huge charity beer walk that takes place every May in Saddleworth. May is an ideal time to see many of the county’s colourful wildflowers and we have some stunning pictures of them in their natural habitats (page 6). Unfortunately, several species are struggling to survive, although Lancashire is helping to lead the way in their conservation. If you are jetting abroad for your summer holidays then it is worthwhile reading Angela Kelly’s article on how to beat terminal boredom at Manchester Airport (page 132). She details the many things you can do to make the time fly by while you are waiting to board your aircraft, including visiting Concorde and following a nature trail. There are also profiles of Kirkham, Bacup, Barrowford and Parbold, a lovely walk at Grange over Sands and some super paintings of Ulllswater. At just £1.60 it all adds up to the best value, quality, county magazine in Lancashire. Why pay more?
